It was a good way to spring forward.

A boy and his board:

I almost forgot to post this. This is a style experiment I whipped up a few months ago when a friend contacted me about doing a print ad design/illustration for Gemini Mixers. I didn’t have any samples that quite matched the style they were going for, so I came up with one. The job ended up not materializing, but that’s how it goes sometimes.

Well here’s something I’ve been doing for a very long time. Doodling in class.
I thought one of these doodles came out looking like my friend
Tharp. Easy to spot. He’s the one with “THARP” pointing at him. This is how he might’ve looked at times while living in the U.S., frustrated over The Man or The System or some such thing, before he expatriated to South Korea, where he now lives in a state of obliterative bliss.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I’ve got some story stuff I’m working on that will be auto- or semi-auto-biographical. The stories themselves are rough at the moment and just kind of fluttering around in my brain. I will tackle what I can as I can and we’ll see what comes of it. In the meantime, I thought I’d share another character design sketch. I’ve been developing my “cartoon self” off and on for a few weeks now or so and I’ve refrained from posting the sketches here, because, well, I guess they just weren’t quite ready to show. Later on, after the character is more established, maybe I’ll post the earlier drawings for the sake of curiosity. Suffice it to say, that caricaturing or making a functional character of one’s self is a unique challenge.
I’ve been doing a bit of sketching, developing characters for some auto-biographical story ideas. This is a quick sketch of my love, Jamie. Isn’t she cute? Happy Valentine’s Day, Jamie!

Pow! Here’s some intense color. Click for a larger version.
Also, here’s the original drawing once again for comparison:
Update: Note, I’ve been told that the colors come up a bit dark for some Windows users. Sorry, folks! It looks very bright on my Mac and I have no PC to check it with.
This is the mythical wahine of Hawaiian shores. I saw her for a moment and in the next she had vanished into the ocean. This was drawn from memory.

This is one of my favorite sketches from the trip to Hawaii. Click it for a larger version.

Yes, I did draw some people when I was in Hawaii, not just rocks, plants, and architecture. These are from Kaimana beach. I loved the image of this guy flanked by two young wahines and their buns all lined up in a row. Also, the couple with their cooler. I like the way the lady’s face, puff of hair, and hat came out. Happy accidents. What else can a doodler ask for?
